Types of Raw Food
If you've decided to feed your companion pet raw food, now you have to decide on what type! There are several options that provide the benefits of raw with the convenience of modern life.
What Qualifies as "Raw?"
To feed raw is to strive for the most biologically appropriate food for your companion pet. Although freshly caught quail and a couple of foraged blueberries for dinner is not the most realistic thing, there are a few more convenient options.
Because raw food loses the beneficial elements of being raw as soon as heat is applied, raw food is any food that has had no heat affect it.
Types of Raw Food: Frozen Raw
The freezer section of the store is probably the first thought when someone thinks types of raw food. Frozen raw food comes in different forms, with patties and bites being two of the more popular ones. While frozen raw is the least-processed option, you do have to take into consideration thaw time.
Types of Raw Food: Freeze Dried Raw
Not to be confused with dehydrated food (which, while more nutritionally dense than kibble or canned food, loses some of the nutritional benefits that FREEZE DRIED FOOD has because dehydration involves heat), freeze dried food is the most convenient way to feed raw. It takes up a fraction of the space and doesn't require freezer or fridge room, which makes it perfect for crammed spaces or travelers. Although, it does tend to be more expensive than frozen raw.
Freeze dried can be the main meal for your companion pet or supplement a canned or kibble diet when you sprinkle it on top. Companies like Stella and Chewy's even coat their kibble with freeze-dried and mix in chunks.
Types of Raw Food: Raw Treats
Raw makes for great treats as well! Companies like Primal offer a selection of recreational raw bones that are sourced through highly clean methods to ensure a safe and healthy treat for both cats and dogs. This is a great way to keep 'em entertained and their teeth healthy.
Treats don't always have to be store bought either! Cutting up a sweet potato? Save some pieces for treats. Carving a pumpkin? Throw some of the meat (not the seeds!) to your pup.
