Tips to Choose a Great Groomer

Here are some tips to choose a great groomer you and your companion will love.

Start with specific questions:

  • Is the groomer familiar with breed specialized cuts?
  • Does the groomer have a portfolio to show?
  • Does the groomer do one dog at a time?
  • What is the maximum time you can expect your companion to be in the shop?
  • Can they provide contact information for referrals?

Ask to visit

If you are comfortable with the answers to the questions, ask for an invitation to visit the groom shop. Look the facility over carefully. Is it clean? Are pets protected? Are the groomers calm?

The groomer should watch how the pet interacts with the guardian. Then the owner should observe how the groomer approaches the companion. It is best for the groomer to get down to dog level and extend a hand for the dog to sniff.

Make note if the dog backs away or seems unusually nervous. Also visit review sites like Google and Yelp. While no shop is perfect, the majority of the reviews should be four stars or better. Also note how the group responds to negative reviews.

Did the owner make a sincere attempt to respond and acknowledge any complaints? A look at the business web site will also provide an indication of the level of professionalism for the shop. Make sure you understand what is included in a full service groom. Look for an inclusive package with bath, nail trim, ears, hair cut, anal gland expression if needed. Some shops charge a smaller initial fee, but then make their money with add-ons.

If the shop has multiple groomers, ask if it is okay to work with different individuals. Take photos of your companion after each visit so you can compare and then decide which person you prefer to use. Clearly communicate the look you want for your companion. Show photos taken after previous grooms.

Ask to be notified if the groomer encounters something like excessive matting that would change the price or the appearance of the final cut. Your locally owned Wag N' Wash Natural Food & Grooming is always happy to answer grooming questions.
