Pet Hydration Awareness Month
July is Pet Hydration Awareness Month
Summer's here, and so are long, warm days. We all need to take extra steps to stay hydrated, and the same goes for our companions! Whether they are active and outside, or they prefer a more leisurely life, proper hydration is essential for our furry friends. You can lead a horse (or dog, or cat!) to water, but you can't make them drink. However, there are ways we can encourage our companions to get enough water during these dog days of summer:
- Consider a fountain for your pet(s). They can be fun! Also, cats sometimes have trouble with hydration, and prefer fresh, running water.
- Always provide clean water to your companions, and clean their water bowls regularly!
- Who doesn't like frozen treats? Try frozen broth, juice, goat's milk, or just plain old ice cubes! (Talk with your vet first, and be aware of any dietary restrictions for your companion).
- Consider adding wet food or something like goat's milk to your companion's meals to help entice them!
- Avoid using metal bowls outside: metal can hold in the heat and make your pet's water unsavory. (The heating and cooling of a wet surface can also encourage bacterial growth).
- If you use a water hose outside, let the water cool first before filling your companion's bowl!
Watch out!
Summer means fun! But it also means it's easier for your companion to become dehydrated. Additionally, if they are recovering from an illness or medical procedure, proper pet hydration is even more essential.
Here are some things to look out for, to help ensure your companion's health and safety courtesy of the ASPCA:
- Dry mouth
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy
- Sunken eyes
- Depression
- Panting (cats)
Our companions come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so their behaviors and needs will vary. Keep an eye on your fuzzy buddy this summer: no one knows them like you do!
