Pet Fire Safety Tips
July 15 is National Pet Fire Safety Day!
Every family needs to have a plan in case of an emergency. Since our furry companions are part of the family, we here at Wag N' Wash want to provide some tips to help you keep your pets safe in the event of a fire.
How can I prepare?
We may never be 100% ready for a fire in our home, but there are steps we can take to help ensure a speedy and safe escape for you and your pet.
- Have an evacuation plan in place, and practice with your pet! This will not only ensure you and your family are ready, but it will allow your pet to become comfortable with the idea of getting out fast.
- Have a first aid kit and collapsible water bowl handy. This may help ensure you're able to address any immediate injuries or needs for your pet.
- Know the location of your nearest pet hospital, in case your pet needs medical attention.
But what if we aren't home to help our pets ourselves in case of a fire?
There are still ways to prepare!
- Place a sticker in an easily visible place that tells emergency workers there are pets, how many, and what kind in your home. You can find these at your local Wag N' Wash!
- Have your pets chipped and collared, that way your pet can be identified if they go missing.
- If your pet uses a crate or something similar, make sure it is easily visible to emergency responders.
- A pet door leading to a separate enclosed space (like your backyard) may allow more independent pets to escape a home fire on their own.
More tips!
Although there may never be a fool-proof plan, there are steps we can take to help prevent accidental fires.
- Don't leave candles or other small fires unattended.
- Some pets may be more curious in the kitchen than others. Ensure your stove/oven is off. You may consider removing the knobs from your stove when you're not home to watch, as your pet could accidentally turn it on. Or, possibly consider blocking access to the kitchen area entirely.
- Hide, unplug, or stow any cables when they're not in use. A power cable for an appliance (like a TV) won't make a good chew toy!
- Consider crate-training young pets. Sometimes our pets get too bored or curious at a young age. A crate may be the best solution for them.
Of course, every family and every pet is different. You may need to try several of these steps, or develop a completely unique plan for your family. However you choose to wash 'em, feed 'em, spoil 'em and keep 'em safe, Wag N' Wash is here to help!
