Keep your cats happy!

Our furry friends of all shapes and sizes including cats help keep us happy, so why not return the favor? Cats need a variety of stimuli to ease their boredom, but also to relieve stress or tension. Your kitty may love playtime, but napping and relaxing can be just as important. Don't forget their diet: a healthy companion needs a good source of energy. Find the right balance, and have a happy cat!

Playtime

Possibly the easiest way to alleviate your cat's boredom is to just play with them! Use toys that allow them to stalk, chase and pounce. If your companion is comfortable outdoors, you may consider bringing them outside with you to explore as you supervise. Also, a harness may work for your cat, allowing you to take them on walks (though this will take some training). A more active lifestyle can go a long way to improving your kitty's overall health and well being!

R & R

It's no secret that cats enjoy a good snooze. They also like a comfy spot and occasional massage (like some of us!). So, it's important to make sure your companion gets the rest they need. And there are a variety of ways to do it! Try giving your kitty his own hang out spot. This could be a padded perch, bed, or "cat tree." Placing one near a window can allow your companion to watch the action outside, and get some sun!

Of course, "rest" isn't just about sleep: your fuzzy buddy wants to relax with you too! Try taking some time away from loud noises and distractions to focus on your companion. Stroke or massage them, and talk to them in a calm, soothing voice. You may find this relaxes you too!

Come and get it!

As much as your kitty loves to play and lounge around, they probably also enjoy being fed. And, since you control their diet, it's important to feed them right! Pet WebMD cites that obesity is "the most common nutritional disease" in cats, which can lead to other complications. Many times, our kitties are more sedentary than their barn cat cousins.

Pet WebMD suggests that your companion should get between 24 and 35 calories per pound of their weight per day to maintain a healthy weight. Of course, every one of our companions is different, so talk with your veterinarian about your furry friend's specific needs. Also, consider feeding your companion wet food instead of (or with) dry food. Cat's don't always get as much water as they should. Wet food can help ensure that they stay hydrated, which helps eliminate risks of other health issues.

What about vitamins or supplements? The Pet Food Institute suggests that, typically, a good-quality cat food is all that is needed for a healthy companion. However, your kitty may need extra minerals in their diet if they are ill or have an underlying health condition. Talk with your veterinarian to see what supplements may be right for your companion.
