How to Keep Your Pet Safe This Halloween

Keeping Your Pet Safe Doesn’t Have To Be Tricky!

Costumes, candy, parties, and fun - while Halloween is one of our favorite holidays of the year, it’s important to be prepared when it comes to our furry best friends. Through all the hustle and bustle of trick-or-treaters, decorations, and costumes, keep these Halloween Pet Safety tips in mind.

Pet Costumes

When it comes to Halloween the first thing we often think is: “What am I going to wear this year?” Or even perhaps, “What is my pet going to wear this year?”

While many pet costumes garner the desired 'Awww, how cute!’ response, make sure your pet is equally thrilled when wearing the costume! Trying the costume on prior to any festivities will give your pet a chance to let you know if they’re stressed or unhappy in their new garb. It’s also an opportunity for you to inspect sizing and any loose fabric, bells, or pieces that could pose a potential choking or tripping hazard or affect their ability to breathe.

ID Tags Or Microchips

With your pet’s costume, you’ll also want to ensure your pet is wearing their up-to-date ID tag. While you may not plan on bringing your frankenweenie out to the festivities, accidents do happen, especially while greeting trick-or-treaters, and you’ll want to make sure your dog or cat is wearing their proper identification.

Greeting friends at the front door can lead to your pet running out, unexpectedly. So, it’s better to be safe than sorry if Fido happens to take an evening stroll around the neighborhood. If you need to update your pet’s tag, Wag N’ Wash offers collars, harnesses, pet tags, and engravings!

Stash The Halloween Candy

Trick for a treat? Not for this furry friend! Many Halloween candies are incredibly toxic to our pets. Chocolate - dark, milk, or baked - could make your sweet fur-baby really sick. Sugar-free candies containing xylitol are also poisonous to our pets. If you fear your pet has ingested something toxic, call your local vet or poison control center right away.

To be safe, save the Halloween Candy for the kiddos and keep them tucked away out of reach.

Watch The Halloween Decorations

Jack-o-lanterns are fun decorations, but one bump from your pet and there goes a lit candle and… fire! Glow sticks make the night a little brighter, but if Daisy gets ahold of one and starts to chew… yikes! Electric cords can power your lawn ornament, but one run and trip… ouch!

Having the spookiest house on the block is all good fun, but make sure it’s still a safe environment for your fur-child, hiding any cords and lifting decorations off the ground.

When it comes to Halloween fun, your little Scooby-Doo doesn’t have to miss out! As pet parents, grandparents, and family members, it’s our responsibility to take a few extra steps this holiday to ensure Halloween night is just as fun for our furry companions.
