How to Safely Entertain a Puppy
Owning a puppy is almost a full time job
There's training, playdates for socialization, potty breaks, getting them to sleep through the night, and of course, making sure they don't destroy the house! That last one can be tricky.
As your puppy starts to grow, they start to test all the things in their environment, usually by chewing on them. To save your shoes, your couch and your sanity, take a look at our tips on how to safely entertain a puppy.
Tire them out!
Before you have to leave for work, and then again just before bed time, take your puppy for a nice, long walk. Puppies have a lot of energy, so the more you can expend on activities together, they less they have for destructive purposes later. Get a leash and collar or harness that's a comfortable fit for both you and your pup. If you're going on hikes, walking on rough or icy terrain or going for a particularly long walk, consider taking extra gear along. Collapsible water bowls, dog boots and a light jacket are all great options.
Feeling too tired or don't have time for a walk? Try to squeeze in some fetch. Use a good flying disc toy or a Chuckit! to wear out your pup fast. And if you're too tired for that, consider a PetSafe Automatic Ball Launcher to do the work for you!
Entertain a puppy with training
A good way to entertain a puppy is with training. Tasks like leash training require both mental and physical work and will help tire them out quickly. In addition, consistent training will help create a healthy relationship between you and your companion. This will make it easier for them to understand what you want when you tell them not to chew on the table legs. Invest in a treat pouch and some appetizing treats so that you're always prepared with a good motivator.
Make it fun!
Toys are a great way to entertain a puppy while you try to get things done around the house. The West Paw Qwizl is durable and can be stuffed with either treats or a bully stick. The Orbee Snoop is a fun interactive toy that challenges your puppy to try and get their treats out.
The Ruffwear Gnawt-a-Rock (picture) has small openings for treats and also a fun geometric shape that bounces erratically and keeps play time fun! All of these toys are made of durable, but soft rubber which is perfect for puppies teeth. A team member at your local Wag N' Wash can also help you choose a toy for your puppy's needs.
Think outside the box
Think of unique ways to engage your puppy's attention. Leave the TV on a nature show with interesting sounds your puppy can listen to. If it's allowed in your neighborhood, consider creating a viewing window through your fence. This way your puppy can see what's going on outside.
Create a safe space for your puppy to retreat to when they're over-stimulated. A new house can be a lot to take in, so they need need a minute to themselves. Put a soft blanket and a couple of favorite toys in his crate. If you have questions or need helping choosing products for your puppy, stop by and talk to a team member at your local Wag N' Wash!
