Check the Chip!
Did you know?
August 15 is "Check the Chip" day?
It's true! We always have your companion's health and well being in mind. And, a microchip is a good step in that direction in case your best friend is ever lost. A vet or an animal shelter can microchip your dog or cat. There may be other service providers in your area.
Step one is to get the chip. Then it is important to register the chip. Step three is to keep your contact information up-to-date so you can always be located if someone finds your pet.
Sometimes rescues register chips to their organization before an adoption. The new guardian needs to up date the registry information.
Already "chipped?"
Here are a couple of things to keep in mind if you've already had your companion microchipped:
- Update your info! Make appropriate updates to your contact information on your companion's chip registry if your address, phone number or even your name changes.
- Use multiple registries! You must use the manufacturer registry that provides your companion's microchip. Also, you can sign up for other nationwide services to document your companion's chip info, such as the AAHA's Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool.
Chip 'em!
If you haven't had your companion microchipped yet, now is a good time to consider it! It is very stressful when a companion is lost or goes missing. However, a microchip can go a long way in helping retrieve your furry friend. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) says microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be returned to their humans, and cats 20 times more likely.
In the event your companion is ever lost, a microchip will ensure that the facility that found him or her will have all your information and can readily contact you. The AVMA has provided the infographic below for some extra information. And don't forget to "Check the Chip!"
