Brushing Your Pet's Teeth
Before beginning this process, note that the best time to brush your pet's teeth is when they are calm and relaxed. You do not want this to be a stressful experience for them. If you're brushing your cat's teeth, consider taking this process even slower. Cats tend to be less trusting and open to trying new things.
Have the right tools
Don't worry; you don't need a drill. Just the right toothbrush and toothpaste! Pet toothbrushes are designed to be softer, so brushing won't cause any pain or discomfort on their gums. You can also use a finger-tip toothbrush, designed especially for pets!
Using toothpaste made especially for pets is crucial. Unlike humans, cats and dogs do not know how to spit and human toothpaste contains chemicals that are harmful to your dog (like fluoride, and even xylitol). Do not use human toothpaste.
Before
Place your pet in a place they're comfortable and familiar with. This can make for a more relaxed experience. Before brushing, it's best to gently rub your finger across their teeth and gums to get them used to this feeling.
Lastly, have your pet test the toothpaste. Let them know what's going on and what you're putting in their mouth! Put a small amount of toothpaste on your finger and let them taste it before doing any brushing.
During
With a small amount of toothpaste on the brush, begin brushing around the gum line slowly and gently. Gradually work your way down each tooth by brushing in a circular pattern.
Don't forget to praise your pet during this process!
After
This one is simple: give lots of belly rubs and back scratches!
*Some pets will not be willing to let you brush their teeth, and that's ok! In this case, you may want to have a professional teeth cleaning. Contact your vet or ask us about local teeth cleaning partners we can refer you to.
