Walking your puppy safely

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting time

You and your family are making a new friend for life! It's not always fun and games though: proper care is crucial in the first few months. So, what does that mean? Nutrition, hygiene, and exercise are important, but one sometimes-overlooked detail is how to keep them active. We've got some tips for walking your puppy safely!

Nowhere to go

Who wouldn't want to bring their new furry friend outside and let them explore the wonders of nature? Unfortunately, potentially fatal viruses like Parvovirus and Canine Distemper may be out there. So, it's best to keep them at home since their immune systems are still vulnerable and developing. This means keeping them away from places like dog parks and trails where other dogs have been. Veterinarians typically recommend waiting one to two weeks after their last vaccination before introducing your puppy to the great outdoors. This varies, but is usually when your puppy is about 14-16 weeks old. Don't be discouraged though: this is a time where you have your puppy all to yourself! So, let him or her get used to their new family; this could even be a good time to start training, or to socialize with dogs you know to be safe and fully-vaccinated.

Tools of the trade

Just because we can't take our pup out for an adventure yet, doesn't mean they can't start learning. Try taking your puppy for a walk inside, or in your backyard: this will help them learn to follow you and to get used to a leash. Speaking of which, consider using a harness for your puppy instead of a collar (especially with larger breeds).

A harness can allow you to control your pup more easily, while also avoiding choking or harm that could come from pulling too much while in a collar. While your puppy is getting used to on-leash walking, it's also a good time to start teaching them basic commands like "sit" and "stay." Some pups are quicker learners than others, but if you and your family use the same words and gestures, your new companion will be an expert in no time. "Consistency" is key (and so are treats and praise)!

Wide open spaces

Now that your pup is the right age, with all the right gear and training: it's time for a walk, right? Yes! But, puppies need far less exercise than their fully-grown friends. Over-exercising a puppy could result in damage to developing bones and joints, and cause arthritis early in their life.

According to The Kennel Club, a good rule-of-thumb here is about five minutes of exercise per month of age (up to twice daily) until your pup is fully grown. This would mean that, if they're three months old, your puppy should get about 15 minutes of exercise twice a day. Of course, when they are fully grown, most dogs can handle much more physical activity! But, it all comes down to one thing: each dog is different and will have different needs. Talk with your puppy's vet to determine what's right for him or her.
